An expert lecture on Waste Management was organized at I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University, Mohali Campus-1, to promote environmental awareness and sustainable living practices among students. The session was delivered by N.K. Jhingan, Secretary of the Environmental Society of India, Chandigarh. Mr. Jhingan shared valuable insights on effective waste management strategies and emphasized the urgent need to adopt environmentally responsible habits in daily life. During the lecture, he elaborated on practical methods of organic waste composting, guiding students on how kitchen and biodegradable waste such as vegetable peels, fruit scraps, and leftover food can be converted into nutrient-rich compost. He explained the importance of segregating wet and dry waste at the source and encouraged students to practice composting at home and in hostels to minimize landfill waste. Highlighting the harmful effects of single-use plastics, Mr. Jhingan motivated students to reduce plastic consumption by using cloth or jute bags, avoiding disposable bottles and cutlery, and promoting recycling and reuse practices. He stressed that responsible consumption and proper waste segregation are essential steps toward environmental sustainability. The speaker also encouraged students to actively participate in plantation drives and environmental campaigns. He explained how planting more trees helps in reducing carbon dioxide levels, improving air quality, and maintaining ecological balance. The session was interactive and inspiring, with students actively engaging in discussions and seeking guidance on sustainable lifestyle practices. The lecture significantly enhanced awareness about waste segregation, composting, and plastic reduction. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Monika Sachdeva, Director, IKGPTU Mohali Campus-1.
